Another great question for a member of our GMP for Dietary Supplements group: Are there any specified requirements for raw materials testing?

There are specific requirements to release raw materials which are based
on the final product in which the raw material will be used. If the final product is a dietary supplement, the tests and methods used
to evaluate material upon receipt must include at least one of the
following:

  • Qualifying organoleptic analysis – Test for coloring by using a visual comparison to a photo of the herb.
  • Macroscopic analysis
    – Cost effective, simple tests like pH, blend uniformity or tests for general properties.
  • Microscopic analysis.
  • Chemical analysis.
  • Other scientifically valid method that ensures the identity of the incoming material.

Informed customers are on the rise and quality takes front and center. It is suggested that you test the end product for contamination of heavy metals, E. coli, salmonella, yeast and mold. Third party labs will analyze samples if you do not have the capability to do so in house.
