Is your Inventory Management Right for Good Manufacturing Practices?

Your regulated industry company has an inventory system.  Perhaps it is a part of a platform. But is it putting your products at risk?

Inventory has economic value, but only if its quality is considered. That’s the difference between creating  revenue generation, or rework and sometimes, disposal. Given that, your current inventory might be a partial solution to the whole inventory equation.

In regulated industries, not only is quality critical to inventory, but it must meet federal compliance standards. That’s the law.

  • A company has an inventory investment in its raw materials. Do they meet specifications? Are they suitable for inclusion in a product? That depends on quality.
  • On the operations floor, there are intermediates, and finally finished goods. The production steps (better managed under GMP with Electronic Batch Records than work orders) that follow material receipt can either add value or add cost. That depends on quality.
  • Most companies have an outgoing supply chain. The customer can either receive product value or incur adjustment cost. That depends on quality.
  • Most companies have a considerable investment in equipment and facilities that are included in the regulatory guidelines. Are they properly maintained and fit for the purpose? That can impact your inventory quality.

Is your current system “stack” taking quality into consideration? More importantly, exactly how?

Think about a quality chain. It applies to the continual monitoring of materials (status) in production, and to how the end items are produced. There are checkpoints along the production workflow that monitor and record the effect of the activity. And the success at each of these depends on quality.

In regulated industries, the quality chain is specified in Good Manufacturing Practices. These practices incorporate documentation of critical measures and events, as well as traceability, as defined by the Code of Federal Regulations.

If you are in a regulated industry (and most visitors to these pages are), it’s a wise strategy to build as much GMP into your operations as possible. And GMP can be automated.

InstantGMP wrote our their system from the start to incorporate GMP and the quality chain within it to streamline GMP operations.  If you do have an enterprise system, we have an Application Program Interface (API) that will connect our crucial quality chain capabilities to your organization. This will help your firm deliver value with the quality that your company should produce and your customers deserve.
